Why Southern Maryland trees are so exposed

We live on a peninsula wrapped in water. The Chesapeake to the east, the Patuxent and Potomac carving through, and low, flat ground in between. That geography does two things during a storm. First, tropical systems don’t have to make landfall here to hurt us — they track up the Bay as remnants, and the water keeps them fed longer than they’d survive inland. Second, our soils hold water. 7 things to do before a storm hits

  1. Walk your property and look up. Most people scan the trunk and stop. The danger is overhead. Look for dead limbs, hanging branches we call “widowmakers,” and cracks where big limbs meet the trunk. A dead branch that’s fine on a calm day becomes a projectile at 40 mph. Note anything hanging over a roof, a car, or a walkway.
  2. Find leaning trees and check the soil at the base. A tree that’s always leaned a little is usually fine. The one to worry about is the tree that’s leaning now with fresh, heaved, or cracked soil on one side of its base. That’s root-plate movement — the anchor is already failing. Circle each big tree and look at the ground on the downhill side. Mounding or a gap between trunk and soil is a red flag.
  3. Get a licensed tree expert to assess borderline trees now. If a tree is close to your house and you can’t tell whether it’s sound, don’t guess. Book the assessment before the season peaks. I say this every July: once a storm is 48 hours out, every crew in the region is booked solid, and we physically cannot reach everyone.   4. Prune hazard limbs and thin dense canopies to ANSI A300. Deadwood and broken limbs come off. Dense canopies get thinned so wind passes through the tree instead of pushing against a solid wall of leaves. This is real tree trimming to ANSI A300 standards — not topping. Never let anyone top a tree. Topping creates weak regrowth and rot pockets that fail in the next storm, and it’s the single most common thing I get called to clean up.
  5. Cable or brace weak but savable trees. A tree with two co-dominant stems and a tight, included-bark union between them is a splitting waiting to happen. Sometimes the answer is removal. Often it’s a steel cable or brace rod installed high in the canopy that holds the union together through the wind. A good tree you’d hate to lose can frequently be saved this way.
  6. Clear the drip line near the house. Walk the outer edge of each tree’s canopy near the structure. Anything loose under there — patio furniture, planters, a grill, stacked firewood — becomes a projectile. And while you’re standing there, be honest about geometry: if this tree came down, where does it land? Knowing the fall line tells you which trees actually threaten the house versus which ones would drop harmlessly into the yard.

After the wind drops, the rules are simple and non-negotiable. Stay away from downed lines. Assume every line on the ground is live — power, and the tree touching it, until the utility says otherwise. Do not walk under leaning trees or hanging limbs; they can shift for hours after the wind stops.

And do not DIY a tree that’s landed on your house. I know the instinct — grab the chainsaw, start cutting.
